1940s Ludwig Standard Model 'Butterscotch' Snare Drum : 5.5 x 14
1940s Ludwig Standard Model ‘Butterscotch Pearl’ Snare Drum
Size : 5.5 x 14
Finish : Butterscotch Pearl
This drum was received in fairly rough condition. It started it’s life out as an appropriately catalogued 6.5 x 14 drum shell however was modified by cutting roughly 1/2” off of each side of the bearing edge, in addition to receiving a silver painted interior applied over all of the internal hardware. The interior of drum was carefully sanded, exposing a factory stamp ‘010 PEARL’. Luckily, all of the original hardware was still preserved on the drum, thus only required a deep cleaning. Once sanded, the interior was painted with a thin layer of white milk paint which is an extremely close match to the original paint that would have been used on this era drum. The milk paint also helps with preserving the antique aesthetic qualities and allowed for the factory ink stamp to be exposed, as seen in photos.
The Butterscotch pearl wrap is one of the more uncommon uncatalogued finishes that has never received a complete explanation as to how the finish came about. Whether this was a special color production of material or a bad batch of pearl, there are only a hand full of kits and snare drums known to exist, making this a very rare drum.
